Cooperative games do more than put players on the same side. They give people incomplete information, a shared goal and a clock that will not wait for a perfect explanation. The interesting question is not whether we talk more. It is how the game changes what we need to say, when we need to say it and how much detail another player can actually use.

A shared goal is not shared information

Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes makes the problem literal: one person sees a bomb while everyone else has the manual. Neither side can finish the job alone. The handler must describe the module; the readers must ask questions that identify the correct instruction. “There is a strange symbol” is nearly useless. “The top-left symbol looks like a backwards E” gives the team something to work with. A vague conversation becomes a protocol: identify, describe, confirm and only then act.

The same principle works in quieter adventures. One player sees a switch the other cannot reach, or knows the route but not the view from their partner’s position. Good cooperation starts with a modest question: what does the other person know right now? A quick check is usually worth more than an elaborate plan built on the wrong assumption.

Pressure makes messages shorter

Overcooked! 2 is a useful laboratory because its kitchens force players to divide labor while the layout keeps changing. A long speech about strategy may be obsolete before it ends. Short calls work better: “Two tomatoes next,” “Plate on the left,” “I’m taking dishes.” Each call names an object, a place or an immediate action. Teams often improve not by pressing buttons faster, but by deciding who calls orders and by naming places consistently.

Brevity has a limit. “Here!” is only helpful if everyone knows where “here” is. When the kitchen splits into moving sections, a more precise call is worth the extra second. Match the size of the message to the uncertainty: brief when context is shared, detailed when it is not.

A mistake can become useful feedback

Co-op sessions are full of small failures. Two players chase the same objective, nobody brings the key, or a rescue arrives just too late. The productive response is not a lengthy postmortem after every slip. It is one adjustment for the next attempt: “You handle the left side; I’ll watch the timer.” In It Takes Two, the characters repeatedly receive complementary abilities. Progress depends on noticing which ability fits an obstacle and communicating that observation, not on one player issuing every command.

A command tells someone what to do; useful feedback gives them missing information. “The platform moves after I press this” lets a partner choose when to jump. That preserves their agency and often improves timing. If a puzzle is new to your partner, ask before explaining its solution. Finishing the room for them can also remove the pleasure of figuring it out.

Pings are a language, too

Voice chat is not always possible or welcome. Players may be in different rooms, speak different languages or simply prefer quiet. A well-designed ping can say “look here,” mark a threat or suggest a route without demanding a microphone. Its strength is context: the marker appears at a particular place while teammates keep playing. But repeated marks on everything create noise. One marker on the relevant doorway is more useful than ten urgent flashes.

Simple conventions help before a difficult level. Decide who marks the route, what a repeated ping means and when to regroup. Two friends playing casually do not need military-style callouts. “Top door” and “blue platform” are enough if both mean the same thing. If the labels stop working, rename the landmark together.

Make room for everyone

Start with roles, not rigid job titles. In a cooking game, one person can watch orders while another prepares ingredients, then swap when the layout changes. State the goal of the next thirty seconds rather than narrating every button press. If a plan fails twice, pause and change one thing at a time. A small experiment reveals more than blaming the last person who dropped a plate.

For a group with mixed experience, choose a game that gives everyone something meaningful to do. Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes makes describing and reading equally important. It Takes Two divides tasks between its two characters. Overcooked! 2 lets a newcomer contribute with clear, repeatable jobs. The best choice depends less on a difficulty label than on whether each player gets information and responsibility.

Cooperative play is not a contest to see who can shout loudest. It is an exercise in building a shared picture from incomplete views. Good teams learn when to speak, when to point, when to ask and when to let someone else discover an answer.
